The Magic of Stanford
Stanford is a quaint little village about 25 kilometres outside of Hermanus. The village itself is absolutely dripping in natural beauty and exudes a serene, soft and downright magical atmosphere. It’s here where you can enjoy a day simply walking through the village, popping by the various shops and restaurants without a worry in the world.
However, there are a few stand out spots in Stanford that we would most certainly recommend you make a turn at.
Klein River Cheese Farm is a stunning farmstead in the heart of Stanford, making some of the most delicious cheeses the Overberg. Their speciality is picnics, where you can choose from an array of different picnic baskets, and enjoy an afternoon on their beautiful farmstead.
Klein River is ideal for a family day out, or to spend a romantic afternoon with your loved one.
Another fun activity (especially for those who like to savour exceptional craft beer) is a visit to the Birkenhead Brewery. This local brewery offers beer tastings of all of their delicious craft beer and indulge in a proper pub lunch. You’ll learn more about the brewing process and enjoy a pint with a view – it’s a win-win!
Hermanus Country Market
The Hermanus Country Market is as much a feast for the eyes as it is for the stomach. Open every Saturday, the market is central on the Hermanus cricket grounds.
Expect farm-fresh, organic produce from the locals in the surrounding areas, wine stalls, gin and other beverage stalls from the wine farms and breweries in the area, stunning flowers and other fynbos plants and a whole bunch of beautiful, hand-made products.
The market is child-friendly and the perfect place to spend a Saturday morning when visiting Hermanus for a weekend getaway.
The Wine Glass
The Wine Glass is a stunning wine bar in the heart of old town Hermanus. The beautiful restaurant and bar prides themselves on the fact that they have over 100 wines to taste, most of them from the Overberg area.
With the famed Hemel-en-Aarde valley just outside of Hermanus town centre, you can expect a slew of fabulous wines from the valley, including the area’s exceptional Pinot Noir. The Hemel-en-Aarde valley is famed for their cultivation of Pinot Noir.
Besides the wine, craft beer and bubbly offering that is, simply put, out of this world, the food at The Wine Glass is just as lovely. Expect fresh dishes and tapas inspired by the local produce.

Fernkloof Nature Reserve Hike
You may have heard of Fernkloof Nature Reserve before, but did you know that the reserve offers a variety of hiking trails for those looking to get out and enjoy the beautiful, natural surroundings of the Overberg area.
Stretching over 1800 hectares, there are several routes you can follow, some more challenging than others.
However, whichever route you choose to take, you won’t regret it. Fernkloof is home to more than 1000 different fynbos species and the views from every trail is breathtaking.
First Fridays Art Walk
This one if for the art lovers (or really anyone who would like to appreciate the beauty of Hermanus and it’s local artists’ amazing work!).
Every first Friday of the month, the Hermanus First Friday Art Walk takes place. An international initiative, and much like the First Thursdays concept in Cape Town and Johannesburg, the First Fridays Art Walk has seen steady growth since it first started.
Art galleries in Hermanus will stay open later than usual, allowing visitors to casually stroll from one art gallery to the next, taking their time to fully appreciate the amazing art.
